Cutting across the Florida Panhandle at regular intervals is a series of clear, forested rivers, their banks dotted with expansive, glistening white sandbars. The river region was discovered long ago by those who seek adventure off the beaten path, and is widely regarded as one of the finest canoeing and camping areas in the country. The single largest concentration of excellent canoe rivers is found in Santa Rosa County north of Milton. The state's second western-most county is crossed by three first-rate rivers, the Blackwater, Sweetwater-Juniper and the Coldwater, which is arguably the finest canoe river in the region. Santa Rosa County's rivers do not feature the wild ride found at whitewater canoeing destinations. Its rivers offer peace and quiet, natural beauty and plenty of fun for all ages and all levels of water skill. The frequent sandbars along the way amount to private beaches for sunning, picnicking and relaxing. The rivers of Northwest Florida are mostly spring-fed and flow over shallow, sandy bottoms.
