Perdido translates
to “lost”, and that is the magic of this
tranquil beach area. Perdido Key is a 247-acre barrier
island near Pensacola on the Gulf of Mexico. White
sand beaches and rolling dunes covered with sea oats
make this park a favorite destination for swimmers
and sunbathers. Surf fishing is another popular activity.
Boardwalks from the parking lot allow visitors to access
the beach without causing damage to the fragile dunes
and beach vegetation. Covered picnic tables overlooking
the beach provide a great place for family outings.
Landscape & Wildlife: *Birding: Upon
entering the park, a nature trail begins at a parking
area on your left. Pine warblers and towhees call
from the pinewoods while the boardwalk winds through
marsh good for clapper rails and spotted sandpipers
at muddy edges; views of open water reveal wintering
ducks and loons as well. Further down the road, a
series of beach accesses on the right (S) side occasionally
allow a look at plunging gannets Oct.-March, and
a diversity of gulls, terms and various shorebirds
year-round. Small bays on the left (N) side of the
road shelter ducks from the winter wind, offering
good, close views.
