Description

The Sweetwater/Juniper Creeks Canoe Trail twists through the Blackwater River State Forest. The upper Sweetwater Creek portion is narrow, winding and fairly swift. After The trail joins Juniper Creek, curves become gentler and the current slows. Sweetwater/Juniper Creeks have tea-colored water with white sandy bottoms and wide sandbars. History records that Andrew Jackson crossed the river at Red Rock during the Seminole Wars. The canoe trail connects with Jackson Red Ground Hiking Trail.

Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Usual Current: Sweetwater Creek – Swift (3+ mph); Juniper Creek – Average (2-3 mph)

Notes and Precautions: Water level rises rapidly after heavy rains. Check for flooding before beginning.

Access/Directions

1. Munson School Bridge – From SR 191 south of Munson, go southeast on paved (SFR 21) at Munson School to bridge.

2. Red Rock Bridge – From Milton, head north on SR 191 approximately 10 miles until you reach SFR 72. Take a right (east) to bridge. (5 miles)

3. Indian Ford Bridge – From Milton, head north on SR 191 approximately 8 miles until you reach Indian Ford Road. Turn right (east) on Indian Ford Road; continue east 6 miles to bridge. (6 miles)

There may be access points (both public and private) in addition to those listed here. Please remember that some sites require a fee for launching and/or parking.
